Amazing shows in a small town: The Burghausen Jazz Festival features top acts and premium audio technology by STAGETEC

Burghausen, Germany, March 2011: It’s a unique record: Since 1970, the best of the best in the world of Jazz music travel to a small town in Bavaria to perform live in the German province. This year, the 42nd Internationale Jazzwoche Burghausen festival opens with a concert by Chick Corea and Gary Burton succeeding headliners of past years like Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz or Count Basie. The event is recorded and broadcasted live by Bayerischer Rundfunk, the Bavarian branch of the German public TV and Radio network ARD. And – for the seventh time in a row – professional audio technology by SALZBRENNER STAGETEC MEDIAGROUP is in charge of all audio networking and mixing in the hall and on the OB trucks. The festival starts March 22 and ends March 27.

The Burghausen Wackerhalle festival auditorium relies upon the same audio infrastructure as the previous years: A fully fledged AURUS console with 48 channel strips and seven RMD DSP-modules offers more than 300 true audio channels for the FOH-mix. A second console, the extremely versatile TRIAGON, is located near the main stage and is in use for the monitor mixing. Both consoles are networked by a NEXUS audio network, which not only connects all inputs and outputs but also provides audio signal processing. In order to reduce outboard equipment at the FOH position and to minimise the need for A/D and D/A conversion, the internal NEXUS DSP equalizes all signals for the sound reinforcement system. In addition, all NEXUS base devices are populated with XMIC+ analogue microphone input boards featuring the unique XMIC+ microphone split function. It provides up to four independent outputs per microphone input allowing sound engineers to adjust their gain individually.

Also the two OB trucks by Bayerischer Rundfunk receive discrete signals to mix their own broadcast mix. Both trucks, the FÜ2 TV truck and the HF Ü3 radio truck are equipped with CANTUS desks and NEXUS base devices by STAGETEC. They connect via MADI to the NEXUS in the Wackerhalle in order to allow the audio networks to be configured independently from each other. Remarkably, the event will be broadcasted and recorded in both stereo and 5.1. on the CANTUS desks, which after all are ten (FÜ 2) and seven (HF Ü3) years old!

»Compatibility is the big advantage of our equipment at the Jazzwoche«, states Felix Binder, one of three MEDIAGROUP sound engineers supporting the festival. »That’s true for the CANTUS OB trucks which are still compatible to our newest technology in the hall. But it’s also true for our team: Although we will have different AURUS, NEXUS and TRIAGON on site as last year, we will be able to reuse our configuration as the hardware configuration is the same. We load our project files, adjust it and are good to go within less than four hours«, Binder says.
